Armor, oil on canvas, 2012
I started this painting as a response to the political attacks on women’s reproductive rights. I wanted to express protecting - guarding, shielding - what naturally and exclusively belongs to a woman: her body. Protecting the reproductive rights is expressed by the clutching of the womb / uterus. But the suit or armor does suggest defense against the woman’s body as a whole. I showed the painting to my bf who asked if it was about street harassment (we’ve been talking about street harassment a lot - particularly my ideas on creating public art around the issue). While that wasn’t the initial intent, the piece can lend itself to that.
